Message So I stopped over at SZ today to have their trained ears take a listen. We immediately ruled out the cam gears, idler pulleys and lifters. Regarding rod knock, Greg listened to it various ways and was fairly certain that was not the case. The sound is definitely lower and follows the crank rotation (like rod knock would) but none of the other behavior seemed to fit. We also cut open the oil filter to check for particles and aside from a tiny bit in the filter itself, the can was perfectly clean.

As such, the best guess is very early stages of a main bearing issue, which I can't do anything about. I decided to switch back to the thicker Mobil1 oil I was running before I heard the noise in hopes that it might be just enough of a cushion to clear up the tapping. Noise gone = slowing down wear. The good news is that I can't hear it since switching back, but time will tell. With a little luck I could go a long time without it returning or getting worse. The best advice he had was to just drive it like normal, not worry about it too much and pay attention if it comes back. Oh and to start saving for my eventual turbo upgrade =)

Thanks again to everyone for lending their ears and advice, especially the gang at SZ (Greg, Seb and Brooke). If anything changes I'll let you guys know.
